Bone Broth

Updated: Feb 23

This is NOT meat stock recipe and they are quite different - bone broth is to be used when your gut has healed and can tolerate it in order to add more nutrition in the form of minerals. Meat stock is much better tolerated but is also much better at healing and repairing the gut lining. See meat stock recipe here.

Bone broth is one of those foods that is something that can be added into your daily diet, This is even more important when the weather is colder as it help to boost your immune system and prevent the onset of colds and flues.

What you will need:

  • 1.5 kg beef marrow bones OR 2-3 chicken carcasses.

  • 3 tablespoons raw apple cider vinegar

  • 4 Litres filtered water

Place bones in a pot or a crockpot, add apple cider vinegar and water, and add more water if you need to cover the bones. I have been making mine in a pressure cooker and this significantly reduces the cook time (3 hours).

Bring to a boil and skim the scum from the top and discard (this will only happen if the bones you get aren't great quality bones).

Reduce to a low simmer, cover, and cook for 24-72 hours (if you're not comfortable leaving the pot to simmer overnight, turn off the heat and let it sit overnight, then turn it back on and let simmer all day the next day).

*** You can scale this recipe to suit your needs, however is always easy to cook extra and freeze it if you want to so that you can easily add it into soups/casseroles/curries etc.
